10 Ways Entrepreneurs Reveal themselves as Amateurs

Karen Rands interviews Jessia Mah. Jessica Mah is an up and coming young entrepreneur that has only recently made the Inc Magazine's list for college entrepreneurs to watch. Karen says, "Given that I talk to an average of 5-10 inspired entrepreneurs each day that are seeking capital to get their business off the ground or to the next level, I have learned a lot. We take time to understand their potential so we can actually help them, I encounter entrepreneurs that fall into the three categories". She referenced the following:

Type 1 Amateur Entrepreneur: All ideas, no implementation.
Type 2 Amateur Entrepreneur: Lots of ideas and half assed implementations.
Type 3 Amateur Entrepreneur: Lots of ideas, lots of implementations, and absolutely no focus.

Karen adds, "I’d venture to say there, not that 99% of the business fail, it is that 99% of them fail if they don't learn how to not be an amateur entrepreneur. I added a 4th type. There is a Type 4 Amateur Entrepreneur -- Lots of Ideas and Doesn’t know what he (or she) Doesn’t know."

Karen Rands got involved in the world of angel investing in 2001. She left corporate world to join one of her clients as their VP and to help them raise their last bit of go-to-market capital. She didn't anticipate the pending market collapse and never did raise the money for that client. What she did discover is a whole new world of investing. Following Robert Kiyosaki's cashflow quadrant premise, investing in businesses, owning a little bit of multiple companies was the way for a dad to be a rich dad or a mom to be a rich mom. Kiyosaki touches on this concept in many of his books. As Karen Rands got more involved in the world of angel investing, she had requests from high net-worth men and women and their money managers to recommend training so they could learn How to be an Angel Investor. There was plenty of training options for public stock market investing and real estate investing, but nothing for private equity investing. In 2003, Karen launched the Learn to Be an Angel Investor (www.howtobeanangelinvestor.com ) ebook series. Thousands opted in to receive the original drafts.
